In creating this clean-lined, modern mountain retreat, Scott and his team had a strong vision for the space, stating, “We put a lot of thought into designing the home plans based on the lot and the beautiful views.” The large windows were carefully placed to maximize those spectacular views, while nature remained a key theme carefully woven throughout the home.
The home’s majestic mountain views take center stage, providing inspiration for the design, and because of the powerful impact of those views, Scott says, “We tried to keep all of our trim work and materials pretty clean.” That made kül grilles the perfect choice for the home, since the company’s floor and wall grilles are designed to blend seamlessly with almost any surface tone, contributing to the clean look the client wanted. These feature a protective coating of aluminum oxide that creates a surface that's harder and more resistant to corrosion and abrasion than raw aluminum.

INSPIRED BY NATURE
In addition to the kül grilles floor grilles and wall grilles, the home incorporates plenty of stylish elements that evoke the beauty and simplicity of nature. Natural light streams throughout the space, helping to bring the outdoors in, while large windows and decks allow the client to enjoy the beautiful views, whether spending time indoors or out. Organic materials are combined with wood exteriors and soffits and natural stone exteriors for added effect. Scott notes that natural wood was also brought into the ceiling details, showcasing interesting textural details.
Natural wood tongue and groove elements add warmth and help to make the interior spaces feel cozier, according to Tricia Vaughn, owner/principal designer at Tricia Vaughn Design, who handled many of the design aspects of the home for Scott. She notes that these touches also help to provide visual transitions from inside to outside with the neutral tones and textures.
BOLD BLACK ACCENTS
With the bold presence of the mountains as a backdrop, the client desired a bit of bold contrast in the design as well. “He wanted to add some dimension to the space while still complementing the natural components and coordinating materials,” Vaughn notes. As such, black accents were used to add pop and a bit of a contemporary element, while contrasting with the more neutral elements. From the clean, modern lines of the stair railings to the sharply delineated window frames, striking kitchen backsplash, artfully curved black ceiling fans, simple bathroom mirror frame and elegant, inlaid table design, touches of black add contrast and elegance throughout the home.
At the same time, black can have a heavy visual presence, so Vaughn wanted to make sure to balance the black details against the softer, organic elements. She notes, “There’s a flow between those elements to ensure the black doesn’t overpower the space.”
SIMPLE STYLE
The client was making a significant transition with this new mountain home, according to Vaughn, who states, “He appreciates the simple lines and shape of modern design so we tried to bridge that gap in this home.” That meant the home needed to balance the “showplace elements” with the desire to evince a feeling of warmth that would feel welcoming rather than overwhelming.
To maintain the elegant simplicity, the cabinets feature a clean, modern design with minimally exposed hardware and push-to-open doors and drawers, and Scott notes, “All the cabinets are panel ready, so appliances are hidden and clean.”
Of course, part of simplicity is knowing when not to “over design.” As Vaughn explains it, “We let the space speak for itself without overembellishing with accents or too many details that might take away from the natural elegance of the materials and pieces.”
